Hi Linda: Thank you for the prompt reply! I grew up in Stanly County among the decendants of Jesse Poplin. While there were always lots of unconnected Poplins in the immediate vicinity my great Uncle Gillis Monroe Poplin told me that they were not really related to us as far as the surname went. Oddly the way he phrased it was something like, ' We weren't originallyPoplins but we are now' I don't know if he meant that perhaps our 'Poplins' eventually married into the British line. Folks from both lines are buried in Poplin's Grove Cemetery, and Zoar Cemetery but it was a small semi isolated area for decades and that would not be unusual at all. My grandfather was told by David C. Poplin (my great-grandfather and Jesse Poplin's grandson, that his Poplins were Dutch. That could have of course actually meant German but I have never seen any evidence of that. However the aforementioned Nathan Puplitz was apparently a Peebles/Peoples/Peoplitz who came from Flanders to Scotland and then to North Carolina. There is also the possibility that Jesse Poplin was Moravian and of Germanic Czech descent. A Slav in early North Carolina would be a tad unusual but not entirely unheard of. Regarding Kirk Shaver, I am like you and can't imagine any reason for him to make up a story as odd as Jesse Poplin being a Poppovitch. He was a local geneologist of good reputation as far as I know. I suppose that he could have been angry at his niece Annie Bell (who I remember very well) marrying Jack Kenneth Poplin and felt that casting him as of Slavic descent was somehow a discredit but I knew Kenneth and Annie very for years (They both died here in Baton Rouge and their 4 children live here still) and I never heard of any dislike of Kenneth who became a beloved Professor of Civil Engineering at LSU. By the same token it does seem odd that there is nothing cited to prove his claim. I suspect that we'll never truly know. There isn't yet a YDNA project for our line of Poplins although I know that some males in our line have tested autosomal (Devin Poplin, gggggrandson of Jesse Poplin via David,David C, Gillis,Dwight,Dwight for example) but I can't find any YDNA tested Poplins of our line or the larger main body of Stanly County Poplins. Sorry to go on so long. Thank you again for replying. If I should ever be fortunate enough to learn anything further about Jesse Poplin (such as see the purported war of 1812 doc that said he was born in Malta) I will be sure to share it with you.
