BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - George Poplin, Revolutionary War Pension Application REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - GEORGE POPLIN Pension Records, Revolutionary War soldiers (Film 0971952) George Poplin S 7328 North Carolina George Poplin of Burke co NC was a private in the company commanded by Capt Ducks (?) and the regiment commanded by Col Littenell for 14 months. He was placed on the pension roll in North Carolina 11 Oct 1833. 22 Oct 1832 in Burke co NC appeared George Poplin. According to what his parents told him he was born 15 Dec 1752 and he believes that he was 79 years old last Dec. He volunteered for 9 months in the month of Sept, does not remember the year, under Col John Littenell and Capt Jacob Ducks and was stationed in the Hickory Mountains Barracks in Chatham co NC. They were frequently sent on short expeditions against the Tories. He was on this duty for 7 months then marched up the Yadkin River and then had a small engagement with some of Cornwallis' troops. Col Littenell was defeated at this place and was separated from his troops who retreated under Capt Ducks back to Chatham where they were discharged. He received a written discharge from Capt Ducks. Poplin next volunteered under Major John Knalls whose brother Nicholas was Captain. This was a little before Hillsborough was taken by Col Fanning and McVeal's Scotch Levies. The Americans marched from Chatham to Cane Creek at Linley's mill where they met Fanning and McVeal who were returning from Hillsborough and a severe engagment ensued. The battle last about 3 hours at the US troops tried to retake Governor Burke and other prisoners where were at Hillsborough, but they were unsuccessful. Col Littenell and Major Knalls were both killed in the battle. Poplin remained in service under Capt Nichol Knalls abouth 3 months. On account of the Levies they had to leave the county and under Major Rossen and Col Golson they went down to South Carolina and remained there until they heard that Cornwallis had been taken. While in South Carolina he was in 2 skirmishes, one on Drowning Creek and one on Shoe heel Swamp. Both of those were against the Scotch Levies. Poplin was discharged by Major Rossen soon after Cornwallis' capture. His discharge papers are all lost at this time. Issac Stewart testified that he first knew George Popl Anson co and had heard it said that he had been a soldier in the Revolution. The following research was contrubuted and gathered by W.A. Poplin GEORGE POPLIN, JR. George Poplin, Jr., the second younger brother of William Poplin was also an American Revolutionary War Soldier. He is listed in several documents along with William including George Poplin Senior's will, in which he was left his father's land in Chatham County along with two cows and calfs, one feather bed and his father's rifle gun. A records search by the National Archives reveals that the other three brothers, John, Richard and Henry were not Revolutionary War soldiers. George apparently remained in Chatham County for many years after his father's death and after the Revolutionary War. He appears on the 1790 Census for that county. He had also cashed an old pay voucher from the war on October I, 1783 in that area. George Poplin, his wife "Patty" and mother "Averilah" are also listed on a document in the Chatham County Deed Book showing sale of 75 acres of the Poplin land on the South side of Bear Creek to a Mr. Thomas Beal on 1 Jan. 1784. George later moved to Burke County, North Carolina. On October II, 1833 he applied for and received his soldier's pension of 46 dollars and 66 cents per annum. His pension began on March 4, 1834 and he received an initial payment, including arrears money back to September 1833 of $140.00. The following is a statement given by George Poplin on October 22, 1832 in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for Burke County, North Carolina when applying for his pension. It describes his service during the Revolutionary War. This is a true interpretation of a copy of the original document (in the National Archives in Washington, D. C.) by William A. and Betty B. Poplin. State of North Carolina On the 22nd day of Burke County October 1832 Personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Now setting George Poplin a resident of said county & state, was born according to what his parents told him on the 15th day of December 1752 and he believes he was 79 years old last December. Who after being duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed 7th June 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein states. He volunteered for nine months in the year (dont ) he believes in the month of September under Colonel John Littnel Captain Jacob Duck, we were stationed at the Hickory Mountain Barracks in Chatham County in this state. This was our head quarters w were frequently sent on short expeditions against the tories and would then return to the Barracks. We were upon this duty about 7 months. We were then marched up to Yadkin River we then had a small engagement with some of Cornwallises troops. Colonel Lettanil was defeated at that place. Colonel Littnil got separated from us and we retreated under Captain Duck back to Chatham where we were discharged. A little before nine months was out. My discharge (a written one, was given to me by Captain Duck. I next volunteered under Major John Knalls or Nauls his brother Nicholas was Captain. I cannot state the year but it was a little before Hillsborough was taken by Colonel Fanning and McNeal Scotch Tories - we were marched from Chatham to Cane Creek at" Linleys Mill where we met Fanning and McNeal returning from taking Hillsborough we had a severe engagement with them. The battle lasted about three hours - we tried to retake "Governor Burke & other prisoners that was taken at Hillsborough but could not do it - Colonel Littnil and Major Knalls were both killed at that battle. Colonel Golson and Colonel Mebane - some other officers commanded at that battle. I remained under Captain Nicholas Knalls about three months. till he was taken with the Small Pox and had to leave the county on account of the Tories. There were nineteen of his command then went under Major Rossen and Colonel Golson down into South Carolina and remained there till we heard that Cornwallis was taken. During my service in South Carolina I was in two skirmishes one on Drowning Creek and one on Shoe heel" Swamp. These were with the Tories and we were kept constantly scouting about after the Tories and guarding against' them during the whole time I was in South Carolina. I was discharged by Major Rossen soon after we heard that Cornwallis was taken. The date I don't recollect now cannot state it upon oath. My discharges are all lost I know not what became of them. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state or of any state.   GEORGE POPLIN 1720/26/30 - 1775 George Poplin was a very prosperous planter who lived in Chatham County, North Carolina. It has been established that he was born between 1720 and 1726. His wife's name was Averleigh (sometimes spelled Avrilla or Avery). He was the father of nine children whose names were William (my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather), John, Jane, Nancy (spelled Nansy), George (spelled Gorg), Richard, Averly (called Avie or Ave, and probably named after her mother), Mimy and Henry. George was apparently a prominent land owner and is listed in several documents regarding his land including 550 acres granted by a Deed from Lord Granville Agent Relation or Agents. The Lord Granville land was a large tract extending across much of North Carolina. George's land is described as being "along Bear Creek". At least two of George's sons, William and George, were American Revolutionary War Soldiers. Copies of Pay Vouchers for their services as Revolutionary War Soldiers are on file at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. His son William and wife Averleigh, (called Averey) were also executors of his estate. George was also a man of conviction. He left two of his daughters "one shilling sterling apiece for they're misbehaving women." An inventory of George's possessions at the settlement of his estate reveals that he was a man of sizable wealth. He owned two slaves along with horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, and geese. He also owned many tools of great value (tools of that time were handmade by blacksmiths and other craftsman). There were also numerous other farm materials and valuable household goods. George, or someone in his household, was probably literate. Included in his possessions were three old Bibles and one Testament, three Psalters and three spelling books. Settlement of George's Estate occurred in 1777. It is signed by Averleigh Poplin (here spelled Avirilla).
  
  It is believed that George Poplin moved to North Carolina from Virginia between 1747 and 1761. In the North Carolina State Library, Raleigh, North Carolina is found a Tithe List (or Tax List) from Goochland County, Virginia and described as follows: 1746 Totals: Southern Parish 1256, Northern Parish 1186, King William Parish 208, 2650 tithes. The tithe list was made in June and included all male persons of sixteen years and upward, also all negro, mulatto and Indian including women sixteen years and above. "Names of servants are not included in this transcription but is available in most cases on the original. A. TITHE LIST by Alexander Trent, 1746. (2) Mary Bell: George Poplin B.   NOTE: GEORGE POPLIN'S LAND George Poplin purchased his property from the Lord Granville Land on October 2, 1761. It is described as 550 acres in Orange County on both sides of Bear Creek which is the waters of Rocky River. That part of Orange County later became part of what is now Chatham County. The land surveyed by George Williams, John Miles and W. Churton. Witnesses were Jason Watson and Robert Rainey. He paid ten shillings at the time of purchase and twenty-two shillings per year tax. This tax was very high and was a point of major concern to the planters who bought Granville Land in that area. A Plat of the land which was marked in the survey only by certain trees reveals a rectangular area crossed diagonally by Bear Creek. On August 12, 1766, George sold 137 acres of this land to a Mr. Charles Smith. Recorded in the Chatham County Deed Book, Page 445 is the sale of a portion of George Poplin's land by his son, George. 1 Jan. 1784 - George Poplin and Pattey his wife and Averilah Poplin widow of George Poplin Decd. to Thomas Beal - 50 pds. - 75 a. on the South side of Bear Creek - joins Thomas Beals own line - granted to George Poplin Decd. from Earl Granville and given by the last Will and Testament of the Deceased to said George Poplin.   From the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Chatham County, North Carolina on Wednesday morning, November I5, 1775: 25- Order'd that the Road be turned and laid out the nearest and best way from the Piney mountain to the Iron Works on Deep River, and that the following Jury or any twelve of them layout the same, Viz Isaac Brooks, George Popland, Richard Popland, Richard Gregory, John Poe, Henry Walsh, Walter Welsh, Solomon Morgan, Samuel Temples, John Montgomery, Balaam Thompson, John Thompson, Thomas Graves, William Graves, James Kendrick, Thomas Dowdy, William Dowdy, Daniel Brown, and make report to next Court. At that time it was the Law of the land that male citizens were called by the Court to work on the public roads. This was much in the same way as they were called for Jury Duty. George and Richard were two of the sons of George Poplin, Sr. and were listed in his will.

Charles Regan went into the Rev from Bute/Granville Co. We do not know why Milly Poplin Regan was living in Rowan Co in her last years. Her children remained in Lincoln Co except for Charles G II who was in DeKalb Co, AL, James who was in Hambersham Co, GA . Jesse who was in Spartanburg Co SC (all of this from the estate papers) the other children remained in the general area of Lincoln Co.

  Included on the 1840 Census for Montgomery County, North Carolina is the name Richard Poplin, Sr. It indicates that he was 70 to 80 years old. Included in his family at that time were his wife, also 70 to 80 years old; a female 30 to 40 years old, probably a daughter; and a child 5 to 10 years old, probably a grandchild. His son, John Poplin and family are also in the 1840 Census for Montgomery County. His mother, Lucy Poplin is listed with a note that she was age 89. Also, she was listed in the 1850 Census in Stanly County as being 98 years old.

  In about 1780 Richard moved with William and Lucy to Moore County, North Carolina. This statement is reinforced by the fact that his father William, cashed Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers in Moore County in 1782 and 1783. In about 1784 to 1786 they lived in Georgia. They returned to North Carolina and lived in Montgomery County beginning about 1786 or 1787.

  Wife's name was Lucy. 16.180 William Poplin of Montgomery co NC was a private in the company commanded by Col Alston in North Carolina for 9 months. He was placed on the roll 12 July 1833. State of North Carolina, Montgomery co, 10 Oct 1832 appeared in court William Poplin, resident of said county and state, 83 y/o. He was born Feb 1749 and when he entered service, he lived in Chatham co. Col Philip Alston raised a troop of horsemen in Chatham co who were engaged to serve 3 months and they marched into South Carolina to join General Asher'ss army who was then in South Carolina not far from Charleston. They joined said army near the Santin River and Poplin was placed under the command of Col Alston and Capt Walsh (who came from Taylorsville NC). From this place, Ashe's army crossed the Santin River at Nihon's Ferry leaving Charleston about 9 miles to the left and thence up the Savannah River to the town of Savannah Georgia where part of the British army was stationed. Ashe's army moved to Augusta and hence to Brier Creek in pursuit of the British who tore up the bridge at Brier Creek. Ashe's army halted here for about a week and was attacked by the British who had re-crossed the river. The Americans were defeated and 130 American prisoners were taken including Poplin. The prisoners were taken about 15 miles down the river to Savannah where for a week to 10 days they were confined in a large house built for a church. From here they were carried down to the mouth of the Savannah River and put on board a prison ship that was lying there. Poplin was confined here with other prisoners for about 6 months when he was induced from fear of starving to death to enlist in the British service. During his imprisonment he was given a pint of rice a day and 3/4 pounds of fresh beef a week. He left Col Alston on the same prison ship. After enlisting in British service he was carried up the to Savannah and made to work on the fortifications there for 4 to 5 weeks. At the time, Savannah was surrounded by the American Army under General Lincoln on one side and the French on the other. Poplin escaped and went to General Lincoln who allowed him to go home to Chatham. A guard accompanied Poplin and others that were in a similarsituationn to the Cumber River. Poplin stayed in Chatham about 12 months and moved to Moore County where he lived 3-4 years and then moved to Montgomery County where he has lived ever since. He had a certified affidavit from Hudson Taylor who lived in Chatham co when Poplin returned from service.

  #3317 Lucy Poplin widow of William Poplin who died 2 June 1835 was placed on the roll 13 June 1835. 24 April 1840 in Montgomery co NC, Lucy Poplin, aged 89 year appeared and swore that she was the widow of William Poplin late a pensioner of this county. She married William Poplin 1767 or 1768 prior to his service in the Revolutionary War. They married in Chatham County but she had no documentary evidence. She said they were married by Justice of the Peace, Simon Poe. William Poplin died in Montgomery co 2 Jan 1835.

  His name appears on the Pension List of American Revolutionary War Veterans. His name also appears on a list of men on the Muster Role of Captain Joab Brooks' Company. Also, on this same list is William Poe who is believed to be the Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather of Betty Brown Poplin, wife of W. A. Poplin, III.
  
  Also, with his 'pay voucher documents are a document showing Chatham Regimental Return made 23 September 1772. This is the front page of a book or log.
  
  Enlisted in Chatham County, North Carolina. Prisoner of War on a prison ship in or near South Carolina. Escaped and returned to Chatham County, North Carolina. Spent three to four years in Moore County, North Carolina. Lived in Georgia for two years, 1800 to 1802. Was in Montgomery County for over thirty years until his death in 1835.
  
  Lucy listed their marriage 1767/68. She was 16 and William 20. This would yield a birth date of 1747/48. The birth date of William per Lucy's recollection is not exact. However, in a later court document, William stated his birth date as February 1749.
  
  Lucy lived to be at least 98 years old. In the 1850 Census, fifteen years after her husband's death, she is shown as living with the family of Frederick and Nancy Hinton on their farm in Stanly County. It specifically states her age as 98 years.
  
  In 1841 the part of Montgomery County in which they lived became part of Stanly County.

POPLAND who was examined by the Court upon Suspicion of Horse stealing, be committed to the pub lick Goal for the district of Hillsborough, there to be kept until discharged by a due course of Law.   48- Ordered that a subpoena issue to Halifax County on behalf of the State to some Justice in said County to examine Sarah HEATHCOCK concerning a Certain Horse being stolen by William POPLIN from one John McCULLEY and that the Justice bind her to appear at the Court of OYER to be held for the district of Hillsin December next to give evidence on behalf of the State against the said William POPLIN.
  William was found innocent of these charges and released. He was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War the following year. The penalty for horse stealing that time was death by hanging.

  The following two documents are from Montgomery County, North Carolina Court proceedings regarding William Poplin, American Revolutionary War Soldier, and his wife, Lucy Poplin. The first is in regards to a pension request by William Poplin, dated 1832, in which he applied for and received his soldier's pension. The second document is by Lucy Poplin, dated 1840, in which she applied for and received the widow's pension after his death. Both documents describe the activities of William and Lucy during the Revolutionary War period and for many years thereafter. The originals of these documents are on file in the North Carolina State Archives. Included herein are true interpretations of these by William A. poplin, III and Betty Brown Poplin in 1990. Copies of the originals are retained in our personal files.
  
  Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 - State of North Carolina, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Montgomery County, October Sessions 1832.
  
  On the first day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court before David Bruton John C. Atkins and Audary McAuley the County Court of Montgomery now setting William Poplin a resident of the County and states as age 83 years who being first duly sworn according to Law makes the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832 who states that he was born in February 1749 and that when he entered the service of the United States he lived in the County of Chatham in said state. He states that Col. Philip Alston raised a troop of horsemen in the County of Chatham who engaged to serve three months and that he this affiant entered the service under him. That Alston and his company marched into South Carolina to join General Ashes Army which was then South Carolina not far from Charleston that they joined said Army near the Santee River in South Carolina This Affiant states that after he had joined Ashes Army he was placed under the Command of Col Alston and one Captain Welsh who came from Taylorsville North Carolina or its neighborhood. From this place Ashes Army moved crossing the Santee at Nelsons Ferry leaving Charleston about nine miles to the left and thence up the Savannah River to the town of Savannah Town in Georgia where a part of the British Army were at that time stationed from Savannah Ash and his Army moved to Augusta and from thence to Brier Creek in pursuit of the British who when they came to Brier Creek to one of the bridges and the American Army halted there for a week or so That the British marched up on the other side of Creek and re-crossing it attacked Ashes Army in their rear and defeated them and took over hundred and thirty of the American prisoners one of whom this affiant was, that the prisoners, that the prisoners were taken down about fifteen miles to Savannah Town where they were a week or ten days confined in large houses built for a church from there carried down to the mouth of the Savannah River and put on board a prison ship that was laying there. This affiant states that he was there confined for about six months as a prisoner where he was induced from a fear of starving to death to enlist In the British services. Alston a prisoner on board the same ship that he was in That after he had enlisted he was then carried up to Savannah where he was kept at work on the fortifications for four or five weeks That at the time Savannah was surrounded at one side by the American Army under Gen. Lincoln and on the other side by a British by whose command he does not recollect That he found an opportunity and made his escape to Lincoln and made known to him the situation and obtained a pass from to go home to Chatham County where he lived That he was escorted as far as thirty or forty miles to Cumber River by a guard who was sent with him and others in his situation That from thence he made the rest of his way home after having been gone about twelve months. This affiant states that he lived in Chatham about twelve months after his return and then moved into Moore, a county adjoining where lived 3 or four years and then moved into Georgia and lived there two years and then moved to Montgomery where has since lived for thirty years past That there are no persons living that he knows of who can testify to his services as a soldier of the revolution except Hudson Taylor whose certified affidavit is herewith transmitted. That the said Hudson Taylor lived in the County of Chatham when he entered the service under Col. Alston. He thinks an Nicolas Nalls knows the same but he cannot tell as he has not seen him in a great while The affiant now states that the permission given by Gen Lincoln to go home has been lost and he can give no account of it. This applicant hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a peen signor annuity accept the present and Declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.

That she is the widow of William Poplin late a prisoner of the United States who was a private in the war of the Revolution - She Declares that her said deceased husband went into the Service of the United States during the Revolutionary War whether as a Drafted soldier or as a volunteer She is unable now to state, as a private in said service. That he entered said service for a term of three months under the Command of Col. Philip Alston the name of his captain and other inferior officers She does not know that at the time her deceased husband entered the service he lived in the County of Chatham in this state. She further Declares that her said husband was absent in the service for the space of ten Months and as he informed her upon his return, and as she verily believing was taken prisoner by the British at the battle of Brier Creek and was detained a captive on board a prison Ship until he made his escape and fled home She is unable to state the date of her husbands entering the service, but she believing it was towards the close of the Revolution. She is unable to state the particulars of her husbands services in the Revolution only as above stated. She Declares that she was informed by her husband when he returned that he had nearly served out the time for which he entered the Service when he was taken prisoner and Detained as above stated - She further Declares that her said husband William Poplin Did applied to the War Department for a pension which was allowed him as will be seen by references to the records of said department in the sum of thirty Dollars per annium. For a more particular and detailed account of her said husbands services She would refer to the evidence upon which the war pension now on file with his Declaration in the office of the War Department of the United States --- The said Lucy Poplin further Declares that she was married to the said William Poplin her late husband or nearly as She can compute about the year 1767 or 1768 which was eight or nine years before the commencement of the Revolution. She further declares that she had by her said Husband three children before the war commenced by which circumstance she is unable to compute the time of her marriage. She Declares that She has no documentary evidence of her marriage as She was Married in the county of Chatham above and from which she has been a great while absent as she left that county soon after the War broke up and knows of no person alive in said county or elsewhere whom She can make positive proof of her marriage. She declares that she was married by one Simon Poe who was a justice of the peace in said County of Chatham. She is able to prove that the fact of her marriage was never disputed that she and her said husband has in every relation of life been regarded as man and wife for a great number of years past and that she were so considered and believed to be even during the Revolutionary war and that they as such were known to have had children so long ago as that --- The said Lucy Poplin further Declares that her said husband William Poplin Died in the county of Montgomery aforesaid on the Second day of June 1835. She further swears that she is still the widow of the said William Poplin, having only married with no one since his Death.   1. 1790 Census Richard Poplin for Montgomery Co. - Richard listed as head of house with one male under 16 and one female over 16. In 1790 he would have to be born 1774 or before. His grandfather George (b. aft 1730) is listed in Chat ham County. His father William was not found in the 1790 census.
  
  2. 1830 Census Richard Poplin West Side Pee Dee River, Montgomery Co. Richard is on the same page, just one line above Will. Will ( Richard's father) is listed as 70-80 (We know he is 80 from his pension). Richard would have to be at least 16 years younger than William. Since "Richd" is listed as 60-70 that calculates to a birth date between 1765-1770. Richd has a female his age and one other female age 20-30. 1866 Census has "Harry" as born abt. 1766 William has a female his age, William also has a male 15-20, 20-30 and a female 15-30.
  
  3. 1840 Census "Richd" Poplin West Pee Dee River, Montgomery Co. He is listed with a female his age, a male age 5-10 and a female age 30-40. This is Richard Henry (Dick) Poplin, Sr. (His father died in 1835) However in the same Census, his mother Lucy is listed at age 89 in West Pee Dee River, Montgomery Co. and appears to be living by herself.
  
  4. 1840 Census Lucy Poplin West Pee Dee River, Montgomery Co - Lucy Poplin is 89 with no other household members listed. She is living in the Township West Pee Dee River which according the census records is where Richard was in 1840 and William and Richard in 1830.
  
  5. 1850 Census Richard Poplin age 84 Stanly Co. Family no. 765. Anne Poplin age 52, Enoch M. Poplin 16. Richard's wife has died by 1850. The others ages match indicating this was a daughter or daughter-in-law (not sure which as Enoch is a Poplin) and grandson.
  
  6. 1850 Census Lucy Poplin Age 98 Stanly County Family Number 648. Lucy is no longer living by herself. She is living with her daughter Nancy Hinson and son-in-law Frederick Hinson. Also listed an page 91 in Stanly County Revolutionary Soldiers and Patriots by the Yadkin river Patriots Chapter of the DAR - 2009 Albemarle, NC. In record copy 869872, the Dar used Frederick Hinson's Will which included children named William and Lucy, pension records and the family names used in Frederick's family to lead to the conclusion that Nancy was the daughter of William and Lucy Poplin.
  
  7. 1860 Census Harry (Richard Henry age 94 b. abt 1766) Stanly, NC County, Post Office Albemarle. He is living with Richd Poplin age 52 and his wife Bicky.
  
  The following research was contributed and gathered by W. A. Poplin - With this Census data there is further validation of William as Richard's Father.
  
  Little is known about Richard Henry poplin. However, he probably was born in Chatham County near what is now Pittsboro, North Carolina. We estimate that he was born around 1766 based on the 1860 census report. His parents were married around 1766-1767 (pension record) and Court records show that they were in Chatham County at least through December 1777. Historical records regarding General Lincoln, at Savannah, Georgia tie with William Poplin's account and indicate that he was probably in the Revolutionary War during the period from 1778 to 1779. His wife and three children remained in Chatham County until his return and for one year thereafter. In about 1780 Richard moved with his mother and father to Moore County, North Carolina. This statement is reinforced by the fact that his father William, cashed Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers in Moore County in 1782 and 1783. In about 1784 to 1786 they lived in Georgia. They returned to North Carolina and lived in Montgomery County beginning about 1786 or 1787.
  
  Note: Included on the 1840 Census for Montgomery County, North Carolina is the name Richard Poplin, Sr. It indicates that he was 70 to 80 years old. Included in his family at that time were his wife, also 70 to 80 years old; a female 30 to 40 years old, probably a daughter; and a child 5 to 10 years old, probably a grandchild. His son, John Poplin and family are also in the 1840 Census for Montgomery County. His mother, Lucy Poplin is listed with a note that she was age 89. Also, she was listed in the 1850 Census in Stanly County as being 98 years old.
  
  The "Poplin Patter" Volume 2, Issue 1 mentions a letter written in 1963 which references Jerry Poplin, Sr., as the son of Richard "Dick" Poplin, Sr. The 1860 census lists Jerry Poplin age 50 living with wife Nancy age 45 and children including Carolina 15, Henry 13, Eliza 11 and Jerry 7. We believe this is Jerry, Jr. inferred in the Poplin Patter letter. His father,Richard Poplin age 84 in the 1850 census is Richard "Dick" Sr., born about 1766. Also, the 1810 Montgomery County, NC census lists a "R. Poplin household including 1 male over 45, 2 males 10-16 and 1 male under 10 years old. This is probably Richard, about 45 and Jeremiah about 3. The Poplin Patter Volume 1, Issue 2 describes a Bible of Richard Henry Poplin, Sr.

• Residence: He resided in 1803 Source for 3 children, one named John is from William A. Poplin's Research.
• Residence: He resided in Montgomery, North Carolina, USAG, in 1810 4 male children under 10 (Born before 1810). This could support Jehu (b1804) as the 4th boy. It rules out Henry "Stephen" as the 4th son as he was born in 1815.⁵
• Residence: He resided in 1820 The ONLY NC Poplin in the 1820 census search is a George,. Henry in TN "could be Richard" which would also accound for Jehu. They both would have moved back to NC as Jehu in in NC in 1830.
