    HelloC Poplin:

recentlyFTDNA reports that we are a DNA match. The ancestral names that youlist are unfamiliar to me. Your last name reminds me of emailcorrespondence a few years ago with a distant cousin re connectionswith a sister of my maternal grandmother. The folks with whom Icorrespondanded lived in the SC lowcountry.

Iwas born in Orangeburg Co SC. My mother's birth surname was Rutland. Her mother was Maggie Elizabeth Bolen who married Henry FrederickBolen.

Iftime and interest allow, I would enjoy corresponding re ancestralconnections.

    AnnetteHairston Boette
    ColumbiaSC

    Therest is excerpts from emails

Marionwas one of the first matches that Margaret taught me about. Hernephew Gibran Stone is the researcher in that family. Marion'sancestor was sister to George Emanuel Bolen.

ElizabethRutland Davis is the daughter of the first child of Maggie ElizabethBolen and her husband Henry Frederick Rutland. My mother MaggieJeanette was the second of the nine children.

Elizabeth'sfather was George Leonard Rutland. I had brief conversationswith George Jr, who is in his 80's, and with his first son GeorgeLeonard III. If I understood them correctly, they both testedwith ancestrydna.com. I had asked them to test with FTDNA, butto no avail.

Elizabethand George Jr had another brother Henry Marvin, aka H. M., who diedas a young man in an accident. H.M. and Faye had three sons.

KennethWayne's father was Haskell Frederick Rutland, one of the younger sonsof Maggie Elizabeth and Henry Frederick. Sometimes, Uncle H. F.was referred to as H. F. Rutland Jr, though his name was slightlydifferent than his father's. H. F. was married to Fannie EvelynMyers. Both are deceased.

Notto overwhelm you, but at one time there were 28 of us first cousins, grandchildren of Maggie.

Ofthe three daughters, Martha Louise m. Fred Kuhland from Charleston, and Arrawanna never married.

Allsix of the boys had one or more children.

Linda,I will need to do more research to give you Great-aunt Joanna'schildren. She had three children, the oldest of whom was J. C.Hare, who grew up to be a Charleston attorney, and two girls, whenAunt Jo gave birth to the baby later known as Margaret, and evenlater as Big Margaret. When the infant Margaret was born, AuntJo died within 24 hours. This infant was adopted out to Mr.Hare's sister and brother in law. This infant who grew up inPinopolis did not come back to Bolentown like her older siblingsdid. Even tho' she knew her birth father (story is that he cameto visit her once a month), and knew the name of her birth mother, she did not visit with the extended family as her older sibs did.

Also,I will look up the next generation who are the matches that youshould be seeing. Margaret G. Waters is Big Margaret'sdaughter, lives in Savannah and a genius with family history and DNA.As I said earlier, James Cuthbert Hare, one of J. C.'s children, isone of them. Molly Pratt is another and Joanna Cawley (sp?).

HenryFrederick and Maggie Elizabeth m. 25 September 1907.

Thisphoto is new to me. Looking at the dresses, it appears to betaken the same day as the full group in front of Bethany Baptist. I'm guessing that Aunt Mat is the one to the left of Maggie as welook on to the photo. Uncle Paul is in the back, and maybeUncle David (I've seen another photo of him). (My Note: That is thephoto Little Rachel had in front of the church)

Manyof these relatives including Maggie and Paul, are buried in thiscemetery. My daughter Meg took several photos of tombstoneswhich were posted to Find-a-Grave.

Ireally enjoy the research part of family history searching, but amquite poor at the formatting of info gathered. That's why yousee no family trees that I have posted. The Bolen relative thatI mentioned to you who is excellent at all of this, Margaret G Waters(mg44wat@bellsouth.net),is very involved with Orangeburgh German-Swiss Genealogical Society(www.ogsgs.org). Ivolunteered for several years but due to health challenges had toresign last winter. Bolen is not one of the first familiesbecause our immigrant Bolen got on the boat in Cork, Ireland, inabout 1764. He came to the old Orangeburgh District and marriedthe boss's daughter, Ann Elizabeth Salley.

Ihave searched for descendents of Aunt Mat because they lived here inColumbia. At one point, I had a lead on a granddaughter, butlost contact. Aunt Mat and Uncle Willie Davis were important tomy mother because they helped her find an apartment in Columbia whenI was preschooler. The Davis Food Store was nearby theapartment location. Also, my grandfather would tell me a storyevery year that we were together near my birthday about the fact thathe was in Columbia when I was born, staying at the home of Aunt Mat &Uncle Willie, and that was the first time he had talked on atelephone (he didn't like the telephone then nor any other time inhis life that I can recall). If we were together and drove onGervais St, he would point out the place where their home stood(since demolished by Dunbar Funeral Home for a parking lot).

thephoto that you sent of Aunt Rachel alone is the way that I rememberher when I was very young. The Bolen's had a thing forphotographs. My cousin Ken has a photo of Martha Rebecca Foglem. George Emanuel Bolen. The photo was taken by one of theearly photographers. I don't have a date on the photo butlikely in the 1880's. Do you have one of Martha Rebecca? If not, I'll ask Ken to make a digital copy and send it to us. Mynote – There is one on Find-a-Grave and I put a link to in inancestry.com)

Also, using FTDNA, have you sorted by "in common with"? That is so much easier than me remembering the correct names of allthe Bolen relatives "in common with" Colby. You wouldfind my name, and click on the small box to the left of my name, andthen go near the top and click on "in common with". After a few seconds, you will see the list.

RE:Maggie Bolen Rutland's children (TOO Many) - This list looks familiarbecause I have had to correct it more than once. The 1st son isunknown to us, Henry Frederick. The last one, Joseph, also. Iwant to correct some spellings in separate email.

FromMe - Thank you. I also caught the name spelling error forEdward Rutland. I checked and the 1930 Census record has all theirnames listed as Ruttond and it includes a "Josph" (seeattached). That is probably why you keep seeing this name comeup. I submitted a correction for the name spelling but there isnothing I can do about "Josph" other than remove him frommy tree.

Afew thoughts ... mygrandfather Henry Frederick Rutland was very close with his Rutlandcousins. His cousin Judson, a real fav. I'll have to ckthe ages but there is a chance that Judson, which could look a littlelike Josph when written, happened to be staying with Fred &Maggie at the time of the census. MyAunt Arrawanna's name did not have an O in it. Also, not tostart a fight, but Maggie's name was Maggie, not Margaret. Oneonly had to say directly to my grandmother that her name was Margaretand she would correct in no uncertain terms. I think thatpeople want it to be Margaret, not Maggie. Even tho' Maggie'ssurname, Bolen, is Irish, she was so much more German inpersonality. Often terse. She and Fred were good balanceto each other. He was a Welshman in appearance andpersonality. Several of their boys were very Irish, greatstory-tellers. My mother was more like her mother. Mygrandfather often took my side in disagreements; you can imagine howI loved him. Also,re Bolen sisters pic, Cousin Margaret and I conjectured that thepicture of the five sisters might have been on the occasion of theirsister Mat's wedding. No proof whatsoever, but she is not inphoto, and the girls are dressed beautifully. Martha Rebeccaloved photography. Also,re the numerous Rutland's, the first Rutland that I can document whoremoved from NC to SC appearing about 1785 was likely a widower withfive or six boys. I continue to have no proof of our connectionto that Rutland though others say so, no proof however. Myworking hypothesis is that the oldest boy who came to SC in thathousehold grew up to be the father of our Edwin Rutland b about1803-1805. Proven ancestor. I say all this to say thatthere were many Rutlands in the area. There also was anotherRutland, William, who removed from NC to SC. Cannot proveconnection between the two Rutland males, Cullen Jr and William. Linda,I have been quite ill for months, only recently getting back to anysemblance of functioning other than as a full-time sick person. I have lots of medical appointments which interfere with researchtime. I promise that I will respond more appropriately, but notas fast as I was at one time. Best regards,Annette

Cousin Margaret in Savannah has a copy of the Immigrant Edward Bolen's papers from his journey from Cork. She has offered but I have not acquired a copy. The Yonn family papers has an amazing land transfer document from the first Edward to the second Edward, later referred to as Edward Bolen Jr who 3rd m. Mary S Bonnette, our ancestors. When South Caroliniana library reopens, if not already, a recommended field trip.
I know nothing about how Ancestry DNA works. May have mentioned that one of Henry Woodrow's children may be there. Julie Rutland Magyar. I have been told that George Leonard's son, and grandson are there.
Yes; now that you write Susan Williams, I remember that we corresponded about this previously.
If you see find a grave entries of our people posted by Alma Thrasher, she is my daughter's mother in law who posted the pics that Meg (she really is a Margaret ) took at Bethany Baptist cemetery.
