• Note: Notes from John E. Poplin's Research William "Henry" Poplin is first in the 1850 Albemarle Dist#9 census as Henry Poplin born 1844 son of Jerimiah and Nancy. In 1860 suddenly his year of birth changed to 1847 in the census record living with the same parents, although Jeremiah is now listed as Jerry. In 1870 there is a William Poplin born in that 1847 married to a Margaret with a son of John. Both Jeremiah and Nancy Poplin were listed in the census as "can't read" and "can't write." In 1850 vs 1860 census for Albemarle, Stanly Co. not only Wilm. Henry's year of birth changed but so did three of the other sibling (Mary/Polly, Macey, and Caroline). I can tell you I am a direct descendant of William H Poplin of Albemarle Township, Stanley County NC from the 1870 census records. William H, my great great great grandfather married a Margaret Jane Long. (THE STANLEY COUNTY MARRIAGES INDICATES HER NAME WAS MARGARET HATLEY AND THE CENSUS SUPPORTS THE NAMED CHILDREN BELOW) William had two relatives (not sure if they were brothers or not) on that same report, Steven Henry and Nathan Poplin. Steven H was listed as "keeping an Irish Mill" while William H was a farmer with $1200 in real estate worth and Nathan was also a farmer with $1500 in real estate. I have always been told the Poplin surname was of Irish-Scottish Decent. William and Margaret had a son named John DeBerry Poplin who m. Maggie Lena Perry. Their son James Theodore Poplin m. Katharyn Salome Maher. Their son, my Granddad John Maher Poplin Sr. married the Barnes family of Rocky Mount. They have 4 children, one of which is my father. James and Katharyn's daughter Edna Mae is my oldest living Poplin relative. Her two brothers, including my granddad died years ago.
