John Colby1,2,3

M, #6999, b. 20 February 1733, d. about 1799

Parents

Family: Elisabeth Hogin (b. 31 May 1732)

Biography

  • Birth: John Colby was born on 20 February 1733 in Amesbury, Essex Co, Massachusetts, USAG.3
  • Death: He died about 1799, at age ~66, in Sandown, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USAG.1
  • Note: General:
John Colby 6th generation of Sandown NH married 1st a Mary unknown called a
French Women and 2nd about 1766-1768 a Elizabeth Unknown. He was taken captive
by the Indians on July 22, 1755 and held a Prisoner in Canada 5 years. His will
    was June 26,1798.
    =====================================
The following copied in part from paper of Roger Lawrence of the Canadian
-American Genealogical Ass'n of Manchester, NH John Colby of Sandown NH enlisted at age 23 in 1755 as a soldier in Jacob
Bayley's (of Hopkinton ) Co. He was sent to Fort Dummer for sentry duty. A
letter dated 20 Jun 1755 to his father, Peter Colby, said he was in good health
and well. On Jun 22, he and 6 others left the fort to cut timbers for the
stockade wall . About a 1/3 mile from the fort, 3 soldiers cut wood while the
others keep guard. A sudden Indian attack led to the death of one soldier, and
the capture of John Colby. He was taken to the Abenaki village of St Francois du
lac, to which he walked barefooted. He some how paid a ransom of 300 Livers to
the Indians and was free in Montreal, but held there until the British victory
in 1760 Coleman's book says that John was taken captive and that his first wife was a
French woman. Fortnier says that John was held at St Regis, Called Akwasasne for several
years. and that he was likely baptized there as Jean Baptiste. On Jun 29 Oct 1759 with dispensations of two banns in Notre Dame de Montreal
Jean Colby, a 26 year old native of Newton NH, Married Marie Josephe Lamare the
26 year old daughter of Jean Lamare and Francoise Jolivet. Her father was
present at the wedding , but her mother was deceased. The witnesses were Jean
Louis Menard and Joseph Denis. Jean Colby is said to be the son of Pierre Colby
and Maria Stra in the marriage register. In the Tanguay record no children are
listed but a child of the couple, Jean Baptiste, was baptized 19 Sep 1760 at
Chateauguay P Q. The couple went to New Hampshire in Oct 1760 after the fall of
Canada to the British. More children were born to them in Sandown NH, and
baptized in the local protestant church. John was able to get the soldiers wages
for 5 years in Canada. Marie- Joseph Lamare may have died between 1765 and 1768 probably in Sandown NH
or did she return to Canada?, and that is where her son John had gone with his
mother and still was, when his father made his will . John Colby Sr. could have
remarried even with his Canadian wife still alive if the local minister
considered the Catholic marriage invalid or if she had been gone 5 years and
declared dead. Charbonneau, Hubert & Jacques Legare, "Notra Dame de Montreal" in Reperertoire

    Newspaper (26 JAN 1809):
    TAKE NOTICE
WHEREAS Peter Colby, Husband of the Subscriber, in February 1808, left his home
in Sanbornton, under pretence of going a trading voyage into the State of
Vermont, and has left his afflicted Family to mourn his absence...His wife takes
this method to inform him (if these lines should fall into his hands) that his
absence is the most intolerable burden that she can be doomed to bear, of any
earthly affliction; as she is conscious before God that she has not in any
degree violated her obligations to him, to merit such treatment; she therefore
conjures him by all the ties of nature, and the stronger ties of Grace, to
return to his Family; and in a peculiar manner to remember the obligations he is
under to his tender Offspring, who in the silent watches of night, are lamenting
their absent parent and watering their couches with their youthful tears, and
willing as is their mother to go with him, if it is his request, to Earth's
remotest bounds; as she is sehtible that his heart is not callour to the feeling
of humanity. ***She wishes the Printers throughout the United States, to give the above, with
this request, a place in their respective papers and thereby aid the cause of
humanity, and lay an afflicted family under the highest obligations of
    gratitude. MOLLY COLBY
