F, #735, b. 20 November 1890, d. 15 December 1979

Family: William Alexander Poplin (b. 15 December 1890, d. 29 October 1930)

Biography

  • Birth: Emma Frances Currie was born on 20 November 1890 in North Carolina, USAG.2,4,5
  • Marriage: She and William Alexander Poplin were married on 1 February 1914 in Richmond, North Carolina, USAG.4,4
  • Death: She died on 15 December 1979, at age 89.
  • Note: The following was contributed and researched by W. A. Poplin EMMA FRANCES CURRIE POPLIN (CALLED "Poppy") November 20, 1890 to December 15, 1979 Wife of William Alexander Poplin, Sr. Emma Poplin was a direct descendant of John Hancock who signed the Declaration of Independence. Emma was one of eleven children born to James Wiley Currie and Ella J. Porter Currie of Gibson's Mill, North Carolina. She married William A. Poplin and they had three children; Elizabeth, William, Jr., and Charles. W. A. Poplin, Sr. died at the early age of 40, leaving her with the three children ages fifteen, twelve, and eight to raise. He did, however, leave her financially solvent with possessions including the large family home on Le Grand Street and another large house on Le Grand Street and one on Roberson Street. Her daughter Elizabeth graduated from Meredith College and the two sons were later sailors during WWII. She lost much of the family money during the Depression. The two houses were also later sold. Part of the money from the sale of the other house on Le Grand Street, sold to her sister Cora Belle, was used to finance a series of operations on my face when I was a small child. The two surgical procedures were done at Duke University Hospital to remove a large birthmark on my right cheek. In 1943, when I was learning to talk, everyone called Emma "Mrs. Poplin". I shortened it to "Poppy". She was called this by everyone for the rest of her life. Poppy worked as a seamstress at Belk's Department Store for many years. She held onto the large family house, renting out much of it for apartments. When she was 80 years of age, she sold the house, designed a small house herself and had it built across the street with the help of her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. George J. Griffin. She lived there until her death at age 89, on December 15, 1979. Poppy was a devoted and active member of the First Baptist Church of Rockingham. She was one of the most kind and most loved women in the history of that town.
