• Note: From W. A. Poplin On September 24, 1902, Mary E. Poplin submitted an application for guardianship of Mollie, Minnie, William and Netta Poplin. This was apparently required since James H. Poplin did not leave a will. The minor children were entitled to real and personal estate value of two hundred and thirty dollars. This was accompanied by a letter written in her own hand accepting guardian responsibility. After James H. Poplin's death, his wife Mary E. Poplin became keeper of the commercial boarding house in Rockingham, North Carolina. She was described as "A woman of sterling qualities, being possessed of good sound common sense, a good heart and great resolution". She was a devoted Christian and for many years had been a faithful member of the Baptist Church.

Poplin, she dies at an early age and is burried in an unmarked grave at Old Baptish Church BUN AND NELLIE POPLIN From the writings of Beattie Flake Price When Beattie Flake Price was a little girl, her mother, Amanda C. Lindsey Flake, pointed out a spot in the cemetery at the old Baptist Church at Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina which was where she said her little cousins, Bun and Nellie Poplin were said to be buried. That spot was near the grave of Maness Liles. No rocks could be seen and the spot of ground was leveled - no markers. Some people say that Bun Poplin went unnoticed from home to the cotton gin where his father was overseeing the work, and little Bun Poplin stepped through an opening and stepped on a moving belt and was carried through the ginning process unnoticed until too late to save his life. Some people say his remains were buried in a sheet. Some say he was buried inside or next to the wall of the Lindsey family cemetery near the old Lindsey mansion where his father was the plantation overseer (place called "The Old Battle Place" west of Lilesville, N.C.
