Biography
- Birth: Richard Poplin, Jr., was born about 1808 in North Carolina, USAG.3,4
- Marriage: He and Rebecca Unknown were married on 9 May 1858 in Stanly, North Carolina, USAG.5,5

- Note: 1860 Census Harry Poplin age 94 Stanly County NC. Shows his father Richard Henry Poplin is living with him.
Email from hollyhillaryeb@gmail.com;
I believe that William Murray shown with Richardand Rebecca in the 1860 STanly County census is not their son...he is a Murray.I believe he is the son of Rebecca's sibling. Either Phoebe, James, who died atage 49 in 1850 per the Wadesboro Argus, or Mariah (see Mariah Murray estatepapers and court papers circa 1853. Green Wesley Simpson admin.) Mariah'schildren are listed as Ben, Mary J, Lydia Adeline, Albert, William, Wesley,Eliza. They are living around Stanly County "bound" to variousindividuals, some relatives. Mariah's children are listed as"mulatto's". There are Murray children (William R Murray, Edmund, andMary) not listed as mulattos, also bound out, some living with relatives whoare white. These, I believe are James children. Two other sisters, Jane andKeziah never married and had children. Jane had daughter Judith Wilmertha andson Soloman and another son by Joshua C Burris, son of Soloman I and JudithTaylor Burris/Burroughs. Keziah had daughter Annie Jane and perhaps daughterMary who married a Jones. Keziah is later listed as insane, but there is amarriage license for her to a Jesse Mills. He is shown with a family in earliercensuses, alone in 1850, marries Keziah in 1851 and in 1860, she is listed asKeziah Murray again. Her daugther Annie Jane became the mother of James CMurray and Aussie Gold Murray. (By Franklin Clark).
Moriah's son Albert Murray marries Mary JaneWhitaker, daughter of Sophia Murray Whitaker, his first cousin. He is listed asmulatto in 1850 and 1860, but moves to Chesterfield, South Carolina and laterFlorence, SC and is listed as white (same wife and same names of children, including Jackson and Mumford, which are rarer. ). On the marriage license helists mother's maiden name as Moriah Murray and father as Henry Wilkerson.Lydia Adeline Murray also moves to Cabarrus County. She is listed as mulattoand has two children Jenny and John by Pink Carpenter (white) in Stanly county. She later marries Adam Faggart (black). Her children John and Jenny marry and andraise children in Cabarrus County. Jenny marries a Tom Kirk.
The children of Jesse and Elizabeth Murray were
Jane 1801-1883, never married, 3 children, buriedwith daughter Judith Wilmertha Murray Poplin and husband Thomas JeffersonPoplin in Lilesville
James 1802 married to unknown (possible MarthaPatsey Laxton who married widower Andrew Boone(e) in 1851 in Stanly County.Marriage license lists Martha Murray, same date as descendants show himmarrying Martha Laxton. She was obviously a Murray on the date of marriage andmay have maiden name of Laxton)...children..not certain. Perhaps the William RMurray in Geo. Russell household, Edmund Murray (1839), not the older Edmundwho married Catherine Ledbetter and aka Edmund Coley/Murray b 1838, grandson ofGeorge Coley and inherits estate of Benjamin & wife Martha Patsy PuettMurray and also the estate of George and Mary Coley. He was born abt 1828 andis in the 1850 census married with children living near Ben & Martha andGeorge Coley.
And possibly father of Mary living with Cagle's.
Elizabeth married STokes McIntyre
Sophia married Samuel Nelson Whitatker
Rebecca married Richard Poplin Jr.
Phoebe married John T. Turner
Priscilla married Henry Garner Aldridge, also had achild, Matilda, of mixed heritage after death of Garner in Civil war.
Wincey Julina (or Winny or Winna) married John AdamPless
Keziah married Jesse Mills, had children who wereMurray's not Mills
Moriah never married had 7 children by HenryWilkenson or Wilkenson, possibly a man of Indian or African ancestry. Possiblya slave of Jonathan Wilkenson.
My research of the Murray's trend toward them beingof Scottish and Native American heritage (Nansemond and Delaware) originatingat Fort Christanna in Brunswick County Virginia and prior to that Delaware, with Murray and Pierce heritage, multi-racial.
Jesse was born in Chatham County to Benjamin andJane. Jane left a will in Chatham about 1802. Three sisters.
- Marriage: Richard Poplin, Jr., and Rebecca Unknown were married in 1825 The 1850 census has Richard Jr. married to Rebecca. Lectie Harwood's handwritten notes (under Lectie harwood in my file) list his wife as Avette. I am not sure if that is a nickname or a second wife.
